Super cheap hostel with heaps of character close to Khao San Rd.
Where is it?
This was the first Hostel I stayed at after flying from Budapest to Bangkok in July 2015. Nostalgia made me want to be near Khao San Rd for the first few days but not right in the middle of the action. Born Free Hostel – Adventura sits in a quiet side street in the Banglumpoo area only 15 minutes walk from Khao San.
Design and Environment
This hostel is not to be confused with Born Free – Vista, another hostel run by the same company about 5 to 10 minutes away. Adventura is situated in an old Thai/Chinese style building with a lazy, tropical feel. Through the main entrance are sitting areas with reclining cushions where you can relax or eat. On the first floor landing is another chill-out spot with fans and cushions.
The hostel advertises itself as “budget” and this is reflected in the price – around 5 euros a night – and basic dorms. My mixed dorm was fairly packed with bunks, though wasn’t completely occupied when I arrived. The beds themselves came with a thin but adequate mattress, reading light and a hanging pocket for keeping personal items. Some may find it uncomfortable that the beds are so close to each other but there are fold down rattan dividers to give a degree of privacy. The aircon kept a nice chilled temperature but like many hostels in Bangkok is turned off during the day.
What I liked best
I loved the laid back atmosphere of staying at Born Free, it was just what I’d wanted to begin my new adventure in Thailand. The hostel was a great place to relax, meet other travelers and hadn’t yet succumbed to the gentrification that’s given rise to the current wave of “trendy” hostels. To top it all, my all-time favorite breakfast place in Bangkok is just 5 minutes away.
What could be improved?
Not much. Born Free Adventura is very much a what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience and for such a low cost it does a great job.
