Cheap and sociable little hostel run by WorkAway volunteers.
Moreto & Caffeto Hostel was home for my first 3 days in Sofia during my visit in December 2016. It’s a friendly place staffed by Workaway volunteers.
I stayed in a mixed dormitory which was basic but clean. Beds come with a smallish locker – you’ll need to leave large backpacks on the floor – a reading light and charging socket. There’s no shelf to put things or hooks. Bottom beds have a privacy curtain.
Prices are good, I paid 8 euros a night in a 10 bed dorm. They take credit card which is handy. Towels are free but no shower gel provided so bring your own. There’s no breakfast either but you can cook your own in the kitchen.
I’ve always had some of the best times in hostels staffed by Workaways and Moreto & Caffeto was no exception. They created a great atmosphere and there were parties 2 out of the 3 nights I stayed. The kitchen did suffer from an avalanche of dirty plates and glasses the morning after the parties, so beware if you have a clean fetish or don’t like washing up.
I really liked the hostel’s location. The neighbourhood felt very safe and I came across some nice cafes and restaurants as well as a supermarket that stayed open until 10pm. Central Sofia was only about 20 minutes walk. Best of all, the majestic Mount Vitosha sits in clear view at the end of the adjacent main street.
